One of the goals of open access publishing is to make scholarly research available to as many people as possible. This helps create equitable access to valuable research.
Therefore, open access publications, such as journal articles and books, are free to read. They are usually freely available on the Internet.
These publications typically use less restrictive copyright licences (such as Creative Commons licences) to provide users with the ability to freely read, download, and distribute these research materials.
Readers do not have to pay a subscription fee to access open access publications; however, depending on the open access publishing model, authors may pay a fee to make their journal articles or books open access.
