Q. What is the Clara Thomas Archives and Special Collections?

Answer

Archives & Special Collections (ASC) is a special space reserved for the preservation and protection of rare or unique material in the form of books, pamphlets, broadsides, or archival records, and for the use of researchers who wish to consult this material.

Archives & Special Collections holdings are stored in "closed stacks" because of their rarity or uniqueness, value, fragility, or because there is some kind of restriction on access and use. "Closed stacks" are the opposite of the "open stacks" in the other parts of the library; only archives and special collections staff can retrieve the material, and the material may only be consulted in this space. The material does not circulate; that is, it cannot be checked out by users.
